Community Question: What became of the previously mentioned payment terminals?

Over the past years, Nimiq has worked with several providers of crypto payment terminals. However, the market environment for these providers has significantly changed, especially in the last two to three years. Today, the focus is increasingly on integrations with acquirers and payment providers who already operate established, traditional terminal networks. This shift reflects the reality that distribution and on-the-ground operations tied to standalone payment terminal distribution are very resource intensive and not scalable enough.

By collaborating directly with payment service providers and acquirers, it becomes possible to connect larger numbers of merchants more efficiently. At the same time, such technical integrations ensure that in-store personnel do not need to adapt to new processes, as the payments simply work within existing infrastructures, for example through payment roaming solutions such as Bluecode.

We continue to maintain partnerships with providers like LUNU and Opago Pay, who continue to distribute their own crypto terminals. Nonetheless, for the past two years, our focus has been on collaborating with existing terminal networks, payment service providers and acquirers, as this approach is the more scalable path for Nimiq. Although this appears to be the more promising approach for Nimiq, it is also the more technically and regulatory complex one, a factor that has repeatedly led to delays in the past.
