From the very beginning, Nimiq has been a not-for-profit open source project. This means that the activities of the Nimiq Foundation have not been aimed at generating revenue or profit, but rather at funding the ongoing development and operation of the open source project. During the change process, it was affirmed to preserve this socially and ethically motivated foundation that defines Nimiq’s identity.
However, also as part of our recent transformation process, we have established that for-profit initiatives can also contribute meaningfully to the foundation’s mission and be pursued without creating conflict for the project’s vision and mission. Commercial activities can strengthen Nimiq’s resilience and financial independence. It has therefore been determined that pursuing for-profit opportunities is both relevant and beneficial, provided they meet defined success criteria, show promising potential, and actively support Nimiq’s long-term financial sustainability and positive public visibility.
