Help shape the future of Nimiq: the new roadmap is co-authored by all of us

Over the coming weeks, we will be sharing the new Nimiq roadmap right here on the forum; section by section, as a draft for discussion, not a finished announcement. We want your feedback, your ideas, and your criticism to shape it before it goes out to the world, because the roadmap is co-authored by all of us: Team Nimiq and the community together.

An invitation like that only works if we are clear about what we are inviting you to build. So, before the roadmap threads open, here is what Nimiq is in a nutshell.

What is Nimiq

It has been quieter around Nimiq than we would have liked, and we want to start by owning that. The past months brought real change inside the organization. A sharper focus, and a lot of honest conversation about what Nimiq should be.

This post answers this question plainly. Our strategy, our roadmap, and a full organization update will follow right here on the forum, where you can help shape them.

The short answer

Nimiq is an open-source, fully decentralized, web-native blockchain protocol designed to enable frictionless peer-to-peer payments. It combines elements of Bitcoin and Ethereum in a streamlined architecture built for the web, and it exists to empower individuals with open and independent money.

In one line: Nimiq is open-source technology for open and independent money, built as a public good by a charitable non-profit foundation.

Every word is deliberate: technology, because we build software for real-world payments, and our proof is working code anyone can inspect and build on; public good, because we prioritize social impact over profit maximization for individuals; non-profit foundation, because that is who we are and how we make decisions.

A public good

In a market that is intensely profit-driven, being a non-profit that builds open source by default is what makes Nimiq stand out. You can absolutely benefit from acquiring NIM. Our reason for existing is the mission, not the margin: we will never treat our users as something to be farmed, and we see self-custody as a fundamental right worth making accessible to everyone.

What NIM does

NIM and the Nimiq blockchain are central to our mission. They are not a side topic, and we are doubling down on both.

NIM is the utility token of the Nimiq blockchain, a role comparable to the one ETH plays on Ethereum:

  • Securing the network. Staking NIM is what keeps the blockchain secure, and stakers earn yield for providing that security.
  • Running the network. Activity on Nimiq is paid for in NIM.
  • Bridging value. When a payment gets sophisticated, like paying over Bitcoin Lightning while holding a stablecoin, for example, NIM serves as the intermediary token that makes the route work.
  • Powering what comes next. Future features such as privacy functionality and community governance may rely on NIM as well.

And paying directly with NIM stays. What changes is that NIM’s job grows: from the thing you can pay with to the thing that makes every payment on Nimiq possible.

Utility first, value follows

Do we want NIM’s value to grow? Of course we do. The real question is how, and our answer is: sustainably.

Our strategy is simple to state and hard to fake: build real utility, bring real users onto the Nimiq blockchain, and let value follow from genuine use. We choose this path over hype marketing and short-lived speculation not because we are indifferent to value, but because we believe it is the only way value lasts.

We back that with action. Through our ongoing treasury accumulation program, the Foundation has been accumulating NIM responsibly and transparently. We will not promise price outcomes; nobody honestly can. What we do promise is the work: making the network steadily more useful, in the open, where you can verify it.

Where our focus goes

Our intention for the years ahead is focus: fewer things, done really well. At a high level, the direction looks like this:

  • Stablecoin payments on Nimiq. Stablecoins are clearly how the world wants to pay digitally, and our job is to make the Nimiq blockchain the best place to do it. The experience we are building toward: you pay for lunch in a stablecoin, it settles on Nimiq in seconds, from an app where only you hold the keys; and NIM quietly does the work underneath. Our ambition is for the world to pay using the Nimiq blockchain, whatever asset is on the front of the payment.
  • Quantum resistance, so the network stays secure as cryptography evolves.
  • Interoperability with Ethereum and DeFi, so value moves freely in and out.
  • Staking yield, so holding NIM and securing the network go hand in hand.
  • Privacy functionality, because financial self-determination includes discretion.

The full roadmap, with the thinking behind each item, comes next — published here on the forum first, as a draft for discussion, not a decree.

Built together

That is the general reminder of Nimiq’s DNA. And the new roadmap is your chance to take an active role in designing the next steps. It lands here on the forum first, with dedicated feedback windows, public changelogs (what you said, what we changed, what we kept, and why), and regular town halls. Bring your ideas, your Mini-App proposals, your contributions, and your sharp, honest criticism; skeptics are especially welcome. The questions we hear most are always answered in the pinned FAQ.

Open money is worth building. Come build it with us.
